이번 전시에서는 보석에 대한 보편적 감각의 전통적 구조주의에서 벗어나 해체주의 관점으로 접근하여 원석의 개별성과 자율성을 중시하려고 했다.

하나의 사물에 대한 우리 각자의 지각은 단일시점으로 구속되지 않는다. 그런 면에서 르네상스 이후 발전된 원근법은 하나의 고정된 시점을 가정하는 조형기법이라는 점에서 흥미롭다. 폴 세잔에서 비롯되어 피카소에서 정점을 이루었다고 평가받는 입체파는 사물의 본질과 영원성을 추구하며, 대상을 온전히 이해하는 도구로써 다시점多視點을 활용하였다. 그렇게 그들은 이차원의 평면위에 삼차원의 대상을 표현하였다.

이번 전시에서 선보이는 빗면 컷Oblique Cut 또한 이러한 철학적 기조에 기반을 두었다. 이는 보석의 상징인 영원성과 더불어 그 근원을 탐구하고자 하는 작가적 열망에서 기인되었는데, 다시점을 활용한 표현이 이를 가능케 했다.

본 작품은 빗면 컷으로 정면과 빗면을 대조시키며 새로운 공간감을 구현할 수 있었다. 또한 원석에 다양한 각도多角度를 더함으로써 보석형태에 자율성을 확장시키고자 했다. 이러한 시도가 작가적 실험에서 비롯되었지만, 관람자들에게는 ⌜재미있는 형상⌟ 혹은 ⌜공예적 유희⌟로 남길 바란다.

Breaking away from traditional structuralism of the universal sense on jewelry, I tried to emphasize individuality and autonomy of gemstones by approaching from deconstructive viewpoint in this exhibition.

Our perception on an object is not restricted in a single viewpoint. In that sense, the invention of Perceptive in the Renaissance is interesting because it is a modeling technique to presume a fixed point of view. Cubism which began from Paul Cezanne and reached its peak with Picasso seeks object’s true nature and perpetuity, and utilizes multiple viewpoints as a tool to fully understand a subject. And that is how Cubists express three-dimensional subject on a two-dimensional plane.

The Oblique Cut displayed in the exhibition also have the same philosophical basis. It is based on the artistic aspiration to study perpetuity, the symbol of jewelry along with the fundamental of jewelry, and the expression using multiple viewpoint made it possible.

The artwork was able to embody a new sense of space by contrasting the front and the oblique facet in the Oblique Cut. And by adding multiple angles on gemstones, I tried to extend the autonomy on the shapes of jewelry. Although this kind of attempt comes from artistic experiment, I hope it remains as ‘interesting shapes’ or ‘craft play’ to the audience.

보석(寶石)의 본질을 탐구하는 공예가

공예가 김연경은 원석(原石)을 다룬다. 특정 산지에서 채취한 천연석(天然石)을 구해 재단하고 연마하여 세상에 하나밖에 없는 보석(寶石)을 제작하는 것이다. 굳은 손끝을 지닌 작가는 암석처럼 단단한 성질을 지닌 원석을 준비하고, 도전하는 마음으로 형태를 다듬으며 보석 공예가의 길을 걷는다.

원석은 지구의 지질작용을 통해 생성되는 광물이다. 자연적으로 산출되는 결정질 광물 중 아름답고, 내구성을 가지며, 산출이 희귀한 광석(鑛石)이 작업의 재료로 선택된다. 작가는 백수정(Rock Crystal), 토파즈(Topaz), 자수정(Amethyst)처럼 투명한 광물과 마노(Agate), 오닉스(Onyx), 단백석(Cacholong)처럼 불투명한 광물을 두루 사용한다. 공예 재료로 선택한 원석은 표면을 자르거나 깎아내는 절삭(切削)으로만 변형이 가능한데, 김연경 작가는 광물의 투명도에 따라 서로 다른 작업 경향을 보인다. 재료의 특징을 파악하고 작품의 구상과 제작을 함께 수행하는 공예적 작업 방식을 실천하고 있기 때문이다.

작가가 투명한 원석을 다룰 때는 빛의 투과와 반사를 염두에 두고 작업한다. 윤곽선은 직선을 기본으로 비정형 다각형을 이루고, 내부는 다양하게 맞물린 면으로 분할 구성한다. 오랜 연마 과정을 통해 투명한 반짝임을 획득한 작품은 면의 중첩으로 깊이감을 강조하고 다양한 각도로 빛을 반사하며 광택을 배가시킨다. 투명한 보석 내부를 조각한 후 일부 무광 처리한 작품은 하나의 원석 속에 매끄러움과 거침, 빛과 그림자를 대조시키며 조형적 긴장감을 드러낸다.

작가가 불투명한 원석을 다룰 때는 작품의 형상을 중심으로 작업한다. 윤곽선은 곡선을 기본으로 복잡한 비정형을 이루고, 내부에는 외곽선을 따라 추상적인 형태를 투각(透刻) 한다. 치밀한 밀도를 가진 불투명 원석을 구조적으로 깎아내기 위해 산업용 도구를 활용하기도 하는데, 이 경우 완성된 작품의 단면은 45도나 60도 등 균일한 각을 지닌다. 작가는 자연에서 비롯된 원석을 풍화와 침식과 같은 자연현상으로 가공하는 모습을 상상하고 비스듬한 단면 표현을 실험한다.

김연경 작가가 20여 년 동안 투박하고 경도(硬度) 높은 원석을 끊임없이 깎아내고 연마해 온 과정에는 재료가 지닌 고유의 본질을 탐구하고자 하는 고집이 담겨있다. 작가는 다양한 종류의 원석을 마주하고, 주어진 형태와 결을 관찰하며, 독창적인 상상력을 구현해 나간다. 원재료를 이해하고 효율적인 가공법을 찾기 위해 새로운 도구의 활용을 탐험하는 노력은 재료, 기술, 형태가 조화를 이룬 작품으로 완성된다. 김연경 작가의 다채로운 작품을 통해 규격화된 나석(裸石) 형태에 익숙해진 관람객들이 새로운 보석 공예를 경험할 수 있기를 기대한다.
